At Lockwood Primary, we create a learning environment where every student is supported to
develop confidence and success in Mathematics. Our approach focuses on building strong
numeracy foundations while encouraging flexible thinking and problem-solving. We aim to
develop capable, curious and confident learners who can explain and justify their thinking,
and who see themselves as successful mathematicians. We are committed to meeting each
student at their point of need – providing support, extension and challenge so all learners
can grow and develop a positive disposition towards mathematics.

Our teachers work collaboratively to assess and respond to student learning in line with the
Victorian Curriculum. Through a strong, evidence-informed and data-driven approach, we
carefully monitor student progress and adapt our teaching to ensure all students are
developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, language and skills.

At Lockwood Primary, we value hands-on and engaging learning experiences. Lessons often
begin with purposeful whole-class activities such as skip counting, patterning, maths games
and practical tasks that build fluency and highlight real-world connections. These
experiences help students to develop confidence, make connections and see the relevance
of mathematics in their everyday lives.

Our teaching follows an explicit model backed by the overwhelming science of learning:

  • I do: The teacher demonstrates
  • We do: The teacher and class work together
  • You do: Students practise independently

Students are encouraged to use hands-on materials and reflect on their learning, sharing
strategies and explaining their understanding in their own words. This reflection is
an important part of the process, as it helps solidify their knowledge and fosters a deeper
connection to the content.
